Lithuania has officially extended the transition period for Crypto Asset Service Providers (CASP) to comply with the EU's Crypto Asset Market Regulatory Authority (MiCA) until January 1, 2026. The move, which has been approved by the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas), gives crypto businesses more time to prepare for MiCA's strict licensing and compliance requirements under the supervision of the Bank of Lithuania.
The extension was agreed to by both parties after a positive dialogue between the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Lithuania and stakeholders in the crypto industry. The initial timetable was too short, and the government gave businesses more time to meet the new standards.
Under the new rules, CASPs operating in Lithuania from 30 December 2024 can continue to operate without MiCA authorisation-as long as they submit their licence applications to the Bank of Lithuania before the new deadline. This approach balances regulatory requirements with the realities of a business's adaptation to MiCA's broad requirements.
The Bank of Lithuania will monitor licensing to ensure that companies meet capital adequacy, corporate governance and anti-money laundering (AML) compliance standards. The Financial Crimes Bureau (FNTT) will be responsible for regulating financial crimes during the transition period.
By extending the transition period, Lithuania confirms its position as a cryptocurrency-friendly jurisdiction within the EU, committed to innovation and a strong regulatory framework.
At AdamSmith.lt, we provide full-service support to companies preparing to participate in MiCA, which sets the same rules for CASP throughout the EU. miCA has strict requirements for governance, AML/KYC, capital reserves and client asset protection-all of which are regulated by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA).
